A New Chapter for Sophie!
Long-time team member and research lead Sophie has departed from Roots to pursue her education and develop her skills at Yukon School of Visual Arts!
Sophie has been at the core of this project since the first Roots Circle, and we gratefully acknowledge the lasting impact she has made on the Roots community and on the Human Early Learning Partnership.
While we are sad to say farewell, we are cheering her on as she sets forth on this new journey of learning and exploring her passion for art. Join us in wishing Sophie good luck!
Summer Catch-Up
Over the Summer and early Fall, Roots held three events aimed at nurturing our community and strengthening relationships with each other. In May, we invited Musqueam weaver and knowledge-keeper Rita to share her teachings on cedar harvesting and weaving. Together we wove cedar hearts stitched with natural-dyed wool. In July we held another workshop led by the Tsleil-Waututh Elder Auntie Rosie, who taught us to make beaded felt medicine hearts.
This month, we were invited by Dr. Johanna Sam to hold a medicine bag workshop for the youth support team at Foundry Granville as a part of their cultural safety training in order to better support the Indigenous youth that come through their doors. The team spent the morning learning to make a medicine bag and reflecting on how to incorporate the teachings of the medicine bag into their work.
Looking Forward
Roots is gearing up for another season of knowledge-sharing and creating structures for more meaningful research relationships. We will be holding a Roots Circle in the new year with guest speakers and opportunities for co-learning and dialogue.
