Our Initiatives

Transforming Research Through Relationship

Roots is a collaborative effort between the Centre for Excellence in Indigenous Health (CEIH) and the Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP). Our vision is to create a decolonized space, rooted in ceremony, that builds capacity for researchers to engage in meaningful partnerships with Indigenous communities, collectives, and organizations (ICCOs).

By prioritizing Indigenous methodologies and Ways of Knowing, we aim to strengthen UBC’s capacity for long-term, respectful relationships that put community priorities first—working “in a good way” through respect, reciprocity, and accountability.

Explore Our Initiatives

Our work is grounded in four core initiatives designed to transform how research is conducted and sustained.

ROOTS:
An Indigenous Partnered Research Circle

A gathering space for students, faculty, and community members to learn more about Indigenous partnered research, through storytelling, facilitated dialogues, and activities.

Roots for Indigenous Partnered Research Cluster

A community of Indigenous and allied scholars focused on teaching and learning, mentorship, grant writing, and identifying gaps in current health and wellness research.

Creating Structures for Meaningful Partnerships

The foundational project that established Roots and our “Blueprint for Moving Forward with Reconciliation and Research”.

Honouring Connections:
A Relational Partnership Workbook

(Coming Fall 2026) An activity-based workbook created with the guidance of Indigenous Elders to help researchers dismantle the “academic ego”.
